Mark's Campaign
This website is a place where friends and strangers can browse the ancient and current RPG campaigns that I have created over the past 40 years. Rather than simply shredding my creations from past decades, I will hopefully engrave them in the dubious permanence of the internet. Enjoy the gallery!

Chapter 4: Heart of the Verduran
I was very pleased with the way this next chapter of the campaign turned out. If I was to ever submit one of my adventures for public publication, this chapter would be one of my top considerations. Based on some vague descriptions of the countries involved by the Pathfinder creators, I fleshed out a political divide between the freedom-fighting Andorans and their lumber cartels, the expansionist Taldorans and the druids of the Verduran Forest caught in the middle. The overall arc of this adventure starts when the ambitious Princess Eutropia of Taldor wished to secretly create a peace between her country and Andorans by uniting two druids within the forest who may find peace to their (and the Forest's) mutual benefit. A secret enemy has been using the political tensions in the forest to gain a great, rare prize that could change the balance of power regarding the unique trees found in this forest.

Following are some background notes I used to organize the ideas for the adventure and give flavor to the motives of those involved.
Part 7: The Verduran Accord

For years, the strife between the human loggers, the fey and the druids of the Verduran Forest has gone through many cycles of relative calm to outright hostility, but overall destabilizing the region. The forest is partly in Andoran and partly in Taldor, with the Lumber Consortium maintaining logging activities in both countries. Although an uneasy understanding between the sides exists in the Taldor half of the forest, the Andoran side observes no such agreements and is in a constant state of strife. The Andoran side of the forest has become more and more violent and unsafe for the families of the loggers or the unfortunate businesses that support the folk on this border. Presently, the most important diplomats of the region are the druids, who can be of any race and who see both sides of the arguments with equal understanding. But the druids are few in numbers and cannot be in all places they are needed.

Khemet views the instability of the Verduran Forest and the instability of Taldor to be a weakness in the region that countries such as Cheliax are actively exploiting. And the fledgling country of Andoran and its freedom-loving rebels would make a powerful ally to neighboring countries in the region who also desire more productive alliances. To this end, Khemet has planned a miniature campaign of public relations between Taldor and Andoran, using the strong ambitions of Princess Eutropia as the catalyst of change.

Eutropia has learned of a young half-elf ‘noble’ called Rory Denodir who has been actively working with the Taldor Consortium reps, the druids and the fey to cut back on the logging business. He has his share of critics and his life may recently be in danger from some powerful enemies he has aroused. However, he has developed a friendship with a druid named Harwyn near his home, who has introduced him to some of the fey leaders. Harwyn is a member of the Wildwood Lodge (order of local druids) and knows of a counterpart druid named Lyana that resides in the Andoran side of the Verduran. Harwyn has recently had news of a rebel few creatures who are planning to do something unthinkable and has enlisted Rory to assist him.

Moot of Ages – at summer solstice each year, gathering of ‘old faith’ druids from all over Golarion at Wildwood Lodge on Isle of Arenway.

Treaty of Wildwood – emperor allowed druids some autonomy to control forest and delegate with fey for lumber rights.

Background/Information for adventure:

-
After years of strife between the Lumber Consortium, the loggers and the local humanoids of the region, a powerful fey leanan sidhe named Belmyra has taken it upon herself to solve the problem once and for all. She is gathering a force of like-minded fey to take possession of (steal) the Eldest Seed, by whatever means necessary and bring it back to her fey domain for safekeeping, possibly using it as a bargaining chip or threat against the humanoids in the future.
-
For the past few weeks, a rare form of fey have been raiding the lumber camps and local settlements alike (nightshade wisps), causing fear and general havoc. The druids have appealed to the fey that they know, but are told it is “out of their hands now” and that “the loggers and humans should just leave the area before they get hurt.”
-
A druid named Harwyn has learned from one of his fey contacts, a dryad called Ori about Belmyra’s appearance and her plan. He has instructed young Rory Denodir to travel secretly down the river to meet a pre-arranged contact and gain the assistance of a group of powerful adventurers to help with the situation. He knows that the contact will take him to a dwarf called Abel somewhere in the south. Rory knows only that Harwyn and his friend Ori are very worried and have asked this favor as a dire request.
-
Once Rory has made contact with the group, they should head north to a glade near Rory’s home, the Denodir Estate, south of Wispil where Harwyn will meet them and explain what’s happening.
-
Once at the glade, Harwyn will thank the group and explain what he knows about Eldest Seed, the sidhe rebel Belmyra, her “forces” and her plan to steal the seed. Harwyn has an idea of uniting the many leaders of the Verduran into a ‘council’ that can discuss, plan and provide guidance for the use of the precious forest resources.
-
Harwyn would like the group to help protect the seed until a council can be proposed and all sides have gathered.
-
Harwyn met once briefly with a druid named Lyana, who maintains the Andoran side of the Forest from a place called Half Moon Cleft. He wants the group to find Lyana on their way to the Eldest Tree and make a case for his proposal. (the group will probably disclose the power of the ring now) Harwyn is surprised, but pleased and will gladly accept the help. He has a suspicion who this Theodora really is (Princess Theodora Eutropia, who dropped that name when her father took power), and will give the info to the group if they seem trustworthy.
-
Meanwhile, Belmyra may intercept the group and make a proposal of her own, planting seeds of doubt in their minds and possibly recruiting them for her own plan.
-
Proposed council consists of druids (Harwyn for Taldor, Lyana for Andoran), fey (Ori the dryad, and Belmyra if she accepts), Consortium reps (Sarl Dagor of the Taldor Consortium interests and Allen Highcastle of the Andoran Consortium interests). In the end, Princess Eutropia and Mari Benedict will attend as well to forge the beginning of a mutual peace between the two countries (and in the process, alienate the Consortium a bit – which will be placated by Eutropia’s and Benedict’s assurances for steady ship lumber orders.
-
Ori knows Harwyn and trusts his judgment, Sarl and Allen essentially work for the same company, but each is a self-important ladder-climber and wants to impress the Consortium, but Belmyra will be the more challenging recruit).
-
At end of adventure, the group will meet at the first of a semi-annual council at the Isle of Arenway, to be held at the spring and autumn equinoxes.
-
The fate of the Eldest Seed will be agreed up on by all attendees.
-
In addition to the council members, at the first council, the Princess Eutropia from Taldor will be there to represent her government and Mari Benedict (daughter of famous Alysande Benedict) will represent the government of Andoran.
There was a lot of outlining and plotting that I refined over the weeks that we played this adventure. So in some cases, these events may not have occurred with the party in attendance. The next two sections outline the timeline of events and The Secret of the adventure.
Outline/Timeline of Adventure Events:

-
Eldest seed will be ready in 14 days (at full moon) from arrival at Harwyn’s glade
-
Belmyra appears from her fey demiplane and begins recruiting for offensive against the loggers, using the ancient Moon Gate ruins as her base of operations.
-
Ori contacts Harwyn and informs him of Belmyra’s actions and intention to steal the seed. Harwyn sends animal messengers to some of his contacts to obtain aid.
-
Harwyn is contacted by someone in the Taldor ranks and is advised to send a messenger to the port of Triela where he can find a powerful adventuring group who will help.
-
After a recent blow-up with the local lumber reps, Harwyn sends Rory Denodir south as his messenger to find the group, fearing for Rory’s life. He instructs Rory to bring the group to the Evening Glade as soon as possible.
-
Once the group arrives, Harwyn fills the party in on what is happening then sends them to Lyana to gain her assistance and support.
-
On the way to see Lyana, the group will be intercepted by a projection of Belmyra who will ask for their aid and a promise to ‘enlighten’ them about what’s really going on in the forest. She will request that the group visit a particular lumber camp before meeting with Lyana, and if they wish to visit her at Moon Gate to discuss this further, they will not be harmed.

The REAL secret of the forest:

By the time Belmyra emerged from the First World, she was familiar with the current situation and the impending millennial seed. Her plan was to sow seeds of terror and confusion among the non-fey of the area and then find a means of taking the seed into her own keeping until all sides could reach a compromise. However, as Belmyra began her work, she became aware of a strange imbalance in this side of the forest. The logging operations proceed at an incredible rate, yet the forest is not diminishing as quickly as it should. Through her local fey sympathizers, she has learned of a mysterious lumber camp where young saplings are being prepared to repopulate the forest. Her fey are not allowed inside, but the druid Lyana has assured them that she is overseeing a conservation effort to keep the darkwood population stable. Belmyra knows that there is much more to this and wants to investigate. She will contact the new group of outsiders and see if they will investigate while giving them her assurances that she wants the same thing as their druid friend, Harwyn.

Faction Motivations (four factions):

Andoran Lumber Consortium – The Andoran side of the forest loggers answers directly to the Board of Directors of the Lumber Consortium in Oregent. They are interested mainly in profits and have limited vision for long-term stability of the forest resources. They see the recent attacks by the fey as a guerrilla tactic used by the fey and druids to wrest control of the lumber away from them and make them look bad in the Consortium’s eyes. Representative Allen Highcastle is a paranoid middle-aged man who has worked hard at attaining his position by stepping on the backs of others and making sure that results are always valued over tactics. Lyana has met with this faction on many occasions to the point of exasperation but has not made much headway yet.

Taldor Lumber Consortium – The Taldor loggers have been operating under the Treaty of the Wildwood to balance the lumber production under the advice of the local druids. Harwyn and his peers have been replanting darkwood saplings in the areas that the woodsmen have cleared and are directly responsible for the protection of these areas. Because of these moderate restrictions, the forest on the Taldor side is larger and healthier, however, not as profitable. Representative Sarl Dagor is also a ladder-climber, but follows the rule of law, while pushing against the druids’ restraint as much as he can get away with. Sarl also knows that in the times of impending war or strife, his forest holdings will be much more valuable and the restrictions would naturally ease for necessity.

Verduran Druids/Fey – The Verduran is a large and dangerous forest and the fey and druids of the forest do their best to keep the balance and peace within its borders. They do not care much about the politics of the humans, elves and gnomes, but do care about the way the loggers and woodsmen are depleting the forest so quickly. The fey have turned to the druids to negotiate with the humans, but sometimes these conversations reach a frustrated standstill. The druids are trying to educate the woodsmen about sustainability and conservation and although many of the day-to-day workers may agree, it is the company reps who need to make these decisions. Recently the fey of the Verduran have been communing with more powerful entities from the First World and are divided about how to handle the lumber companies. Some are outright belligerent and hostile, proposing the extermination of the outsiders, while others are willing to discuss with the druids and find a compromise. When the Lean Sidhe Belmyra emerged from her domain and made her presence known, the untrusting among the fey started to flock to her cause. In addition, she brought a large contingent of Nightshade Wisps with her to act as ruthless enforcers. The neutral few now fear that war is inevitable and wait anxiously for the druids to come up with a plan to avert disaster.

Belmyra and her Fey – Belmyra has decided that she needs to harvest the seed herself and hold it until a council of druids, fey, woodsmen and loggers can all agree on a plan for the valuable item. She sees Lyana and her allies as an obstruction to either go around or through and has no problem with pushing them out of her way by whatever means she needs.

Travel to the Evening Glade:
-
The group can travel either by foot (24 mi/day) horse (40 mi/day) or barge (10 mi/day).
-
From Triela, they can use the River Path or the High Road
-
The track from Triela to Agerton is fairly well-traveled and safe since most merchants, loggers, barrelers and polers are using it at all times of the year.
-
Travel distance to Agerton (240 mi), Blackstone (480 mi), Evening Glade (720 mi)
