Once back at the Rising Sun, they are greeted by Abel who is sitting on the railing whittling a dark piece of wood (darkwood) into the vague shape of a bear. “Welcome back, my friends! It is good to see you whole and no worse for the wear. Since you’re here, I’m assuming that your mission was a rousing success.” As he chuckles and you’ll see the other instructors come on deck.

“We’ve had some personnel changes around here, so let’s hit the galley and I’ll fill you in.” You and Abel go to the galley where food and drink are waiting. In here, you see the shy half-elf Livini, who you already know and a person you’ve never seen before; a young looking half-elf, wearing leather armor and a fine tunic and cloak. His pale skin has blotches of purple-red in various places and he gives off a strong odor of alcohol.

Abel turns to Livini – “Livini, my dear, tell our friends what has transpired.”

Livini looks at all of you, then swallows nervously and looks at the table. “We were sent into the city of Triela on a mission, the five of us. We were to travel north up the river and… well, we didn’t make it very far. That first night, well, Elmast suggested we go to a tavern to toast our first mission and you know Jacor, he just kept drinking and drinking and then got really rude. We left the tavern after a couple hours to find a place to sleep but then these sailors started making crude jokes about his, uh, well, his race and all. Of course, the idiot Trent was offended by that and then everything happened so fast. I fell over something large; I think it was Elmast, then there were sounds of fighting, then steel on steel and when it was quiet again…” She sighs loudly. “They were all dead. And the sailors were going through their belongings. I was so afraid, but I must have been hidden because they didn’t notice me. Once the sailors left, I hid in town for the night then came back to the ship. I don’t know what happened to the others though…”

Abel pats her gently on the shoulder, “Don’t you worry more little lady, we’ll be taking you home soon enough.” He then turns to the stranger. “And I would like to introduce you all to Master Denodir.”

He look at you and says, “Please, call me Rory.”
Abel prompts him, “Go ahead son, tell them your sorry tale, heh!”

Rory takes a deep breath and looks down at his plate. “Well, I don’t know how much you know about the Verduran Forest? (DC 20 local knowledge to know of current strife) You see, there is a war going on there right now. Not the kind with armies and horses, but still a deadly war. The Lumber Consortium pays well for harvesting the Darkwood trees, but the local fey in the forest are creating a resistance. The druids do what they can to mediate between the sides, and there has been more success on the Taldor side of the Verduran, but on the Anduran side… it’s getting brutal and deadly. We need to find a way for all sides to exist peacefully, but it will be difficult. My family is not happy with my choices, but I think that the safety of the forest is more important than the huge profits of the Consortium. I have been sent by a good friend of mine, a druid called Harwyn to find help for him to prevent an impending disaster for the forest. He wouldn’t tell me exactly what the danger is, but I have known him since I was small and I trust him. Abel says that you may be just the group to help.”

<let the group question him if they want>

Abel will interrupt at this point. “Get some rest today. We sail back tonight for Triela. There’s some important things we need to do there and maybe you’ll last longer than the night in town!” Livini looks self-consciously away. Abel leaves and Livini will tell the group that she is going home and that this is not her ‘thing’. A good library sounds wonderful and she is not cut out to be an adventurer. The group can get to know Rory who will be joining them on their next task.

During the first evening, at about midnight, Po will gather Meridian and Tark to the hold area where they typically train.

“Part of your training under my direction will require you to develop your own… style, if you will. You will find that we users of magic may be a silver per dozen, but there are a few of us who stand out among the rest and thus make ourselves a more valuable commodity to the rest of the world. The key to this value is your skill to personalize your abilities. Your first assignment from me is to create your own, new and never before seen, spell. We’ll start out with a simple first level spell, then see how you do. For now, I only want you to think of a rough description of something new. This is a lot harder than it seems on the surface. First level spells are useful but not devastating. I’ll help guide you in the proper direction soon, but I brought you down here to show you one of my own creations. It is called The Shadow Gate spell. Please follow me onto the deck.”

Po leads you up to the forecastle of the ship and you can see a clear night with stars reflected in the water below. There is no sign of lights or land nearby. He sits down near the bow and begins to chant a complex incantation. Soon, spidery filaments of arcane energy begin stretching from his fingertips out in front of the ship creating a circular ring about 30 feet in diameter. Through the ring, you can see the ocean, but it looks like the waves are more turbulent.

“What you are seeing is a view of the ocean a long distance from here, approximately 100 miles. My spell allows us to see what is on the other side of the shadow gate, and if all is clear…” His fingers pull back toward his body and the ring begins to swallow the entire ship.  “…we can sail through.

Yeah, that personal spell thing was forgotten in the mix... oops. This is the point in the campaign where the group is introduced to a new party member, an inquisitor named Roga.

Introduction of Roga

One of the most important ongoing battles in the world is being fought today in northern Avistan. Waves after waves of demonic invaders surge forth from the Worldwound in great and seemingly inexhaustible numbers, continuously repelled by the tenacious, brave fighters of the nearby lands of Numeria, Mendev and Ustalav. The 4th Mendevian Crusade, led by Crusader Queen Galfrey of Mendev is well under way and thousands of able-bodied people of all nations are flocking to the northern fronts to assist in the effort, or give their lives heroically to preserve the future of their countries. Numeria is now a land of war-staging. People of all races and backgrounds travel through the strange and dangerous country on their way to the war and it is in this turbulent place that Roga finds himself.

After spending some time in the Mendev capital of Nerosyan, nicknamed the Diamond of the North (due to the shape of the central Cruciform Cathedral and the city’s strength, beauty and sharp-edged purpose poised against the wild hordes at its doors), Roga has discovered that the war has brought peoples of many religions, beliefs and motivations to his lands. Nerosyan is a bastion of good, led by the church of Iomedae and is the stronghold of Queen Galfrey. But there are people of all types in the city and it is obvious that the quality of a strong sword arm and solid armor is more important than the quality of the person himself in the war. Holy warriors of Iomedae and Gorum fight in the same battle lines, under different leaders, but with the same purpose. Roga has recently been contracted by a group of mercenary adventurers to lead them back through Numeria, around the treacherous Felldales and to Castle Urion to meet the famous griffon riders of the Knights of Iomedae. Which is just as well, because after spending some time learning about the nature of the war and its legions of soldiers, Roga was ready to return to his familiar homeland. So with his new patrons, he led them back to Numeria and the first stop; the border town of Aaramor. This ancient fortress is a holy site for the faithful of Gorum, and in stark contrast to the righteous warriors of Nerosyan, Aaramor hosts the glory-seeking, battle-hardened Gorum faithful. The merc group is currently exploring the fortress for a few days which gives Roga some time to catch up with church rumors and recent events.

On the second day in town, one of the church leaders, a fellow kellid who has been catching Roga up on recent events seeks him out during his morning prayers and workout. “I am so sorry to disturb your devotion, but I thought you may want to know- there has been some sort of disturbance in the cellars of the visiting barracks where you are staying. I think you may want to check it out, there are a lot of people milling around there now, but no one is saying what’s going on.”

Due to scheduling conflicts, Roga's introduction to the group was delayed until this point, but the recruitment method was the same. Night night Roga...

Abel Redforge Manipulator

When Khemet first met Abel, he was skeptical of the dwarf’s ability to serve his visionary interests in the field. But soon, Abel proved to be a wily manipulator of a magnitude that Khemet never guessed. When Khemet hired him to screen and gather potential candidates for his world PR campaign, Abel understood quickly what Khemet was seeking. He had no need to be a ruler himself, but enjoyed working the world as a master gamester. Abel had a natural knack for gauging the worth of people he had just met and he devised a plan to gather information about local up and coming heroes in far distant lands, by use of a vast network of rumor-mongers and shady friends gathered over the decades. Along with some of his most trusted friends, Abel proposed a special ship that would be used as a mobile base of operations and could be used to isolate, train and transport his recruits around the Inner Sea area. Abel spent several months tracking rumors and identifying several potential candidates, utilizing his associate’s abilities to teleport near to them and make first hand observations of the future recruits. But Abel’s schemes have many facets. He plans to recruit two groups of people; one that will be his prime choices, and a second group that will serve to reinforce the bond of his primary recruits with their sacrifice. His original plan was to start with the prime group in Taldor and then drop the secondary group in Triela, where he would engineer a failed quest. Although he did assign the secondary group the ultimate goal that will be given to the primary group after Taldor, he has leaked information to the local thugs about some ‘wealthy visitors’ who may be good marks.

Meanwhile, Abel has received intelligence that the primary group may be in need of a holy warrior and so he has stepped up the recruitment of a potential in the far north. He has decided to test the new man in a brutal crucible, but one that may produce a superb product. Abel has released a minor demon in the town where Roga current visits and has assumed the guise of an inexperienced warrior to observe and evaluate. If Roga survives the encounter, Abel will make the usual offers.

Rescuing the Caskmaster

Since the original group of adventurers all but perished in their mission, this left a lonely half-elf stranded in a barrel for much longer than he had been promised. The timing with the arrival of Roga is fortunate and Abel will send Roga on a solo mission.

On the third day aboard the Rising Sun, Roga will awaken to find that they have pulled into the port of Triela. This is about 2 days after he picked up Livini and got her story about the mission failure. Roga will be assigned the task to head up the river to the town of Downpole and find the cask with the mark of House Denodir and free the poor half-elf. Then, bring him as quickly and inconspicuously back to Triela.

Possible Encounters:
-    4 goblin scouts (on way up)
-    2 drunk sailors/thugs, F2 (they have some of the belongings of the other group including a masterwork longsword, some scalemail, 4 CLW potions and 135gp (on way back)
-    2 wererats (if not careful about travelling on way back)

Once back at the ship, Abel will reward Roga with a Wand of CMW (2d8+3) with 50ch for a job well done. And will have a short assignment for him while the ship is picking up the other group.

“A job well done on bringing the lad back here to the ship, but it seems that you did indeed have a sneaky little tail on you while you headed back. I’m not sure who he is, but I’d like you to stay in town for the next day or two and see what you can dig up about him. The report I received was of a gnome asking around about the half-elf lad you rescued. I don’t need you to do anything drastic, but if you can find out where he’s staying and where he goes, that may give us an advantage in the near future.” Abel will leave Roga in Triela to find and spy on the mysterious gnome.

-    The gnome is actually a magically disguised satyr named Myx, but he’s calling himself Jingles as a gnome and plays the pipes
-    Myx/Jingles is trying to get a job as entertainment in a tavern called The Sober Satyr, a name which he finds extremely amusing (owner is Miles Browning, a middle-aged human and his wife, Midge)
-    When Roga finds him, he will be attempting to charm a whole room of people DC18 Will or Charmed to become his good friends and cheer loudly for him. Once charmed, the crowd will be questioned subtly about the half-elf
-    No one yet has seen the half-elf unless the pair made a show of coming into town or interacting with the locals
-    He takes a room at the inn and is always seen with an adoring female on an arm or other body part (if he is in his room)

Abel eventually wants the group to privately question him and his interest in the half elf. If outnumbered he will either try to escape, or will confess to save his own skin. He tells them that he was hired by an elf named Thelian to locate a half-elf newly arrived in Triela and send a message back via SNA3 if he finds him. Myx has a total of 350gp, 5x25gp gems and a Cloak of Resistance +2. (Thelian is one of Belmyra’s chief lieutenants)
